question 1. In what ways does your media product use , develop or challenge forms and conventions of a real media products?
The first convention which we used is our the credits themselves , as with most thrillers our opening credits are shown on a different background instead of being superimposed over the camera shot ,we used this to create a sense of familiarity ; we also used the convention of linking the appearance of the credits into the subject matter , we did this by putting distorted black font over a crackling television screen we used this to create and enhance the sense of sisister confusion , another thriller film that uses this convention is inception where the font looks like a maze which later ties in with the fact that the protagonists wife is stuck in a dream world .

The second convention we used in our media piece was the convention of suspense this is one of the most widely used and accepted thriller convention and it could be argued that a thriller really needs suspense to be properly classified as a thriller , The way we utilised this convention was by shooting various shots of our protagonist walking in remote ereas without any exlpanation to why she was there or what she was doing , this leads the audience to begin to ask these question and creates a sense of suspense as they will eventually find out whats going on as the film goes on , a familiar mysterious convention was used in the making of the da vinci code the aspect of which i am referring to is the scene near the start of the film where there is a dead man lying naked in an art gallery without any explanation to how he got there or why he is there

When it came to developing conventions we made a big decision to have a female protagonist this is done very rarely in the cinematic industry , most films have a male protagonist . However after the recent release of the film black swan we decided we would develop the little used convention of habving a female lead this was for two reasons firstly to set our peice apart from most others but secondly to appealto our target audience , and also because we beleive that there are many aspects of femininity yet to be displayed in thriller films.
the second way we developed a convention was by using alot of cross cuts for the same character in different times and circumstances , we used this to create the feel of jumping back and forth in time this was neccesary as we only have one charachter in our opening scene, other films that have used this is inception where they use a familiar technique for showing real time and dream time .

the first convention that we challenged was using horror elements in a thriller film we used elements familiar to films such as the ring , we decided to do this to set our film apart from most other thrillers and we thought that it would help and emphasizes the dark subject matter this can bee seen by the entrapment of the main charachter a convention often used in horror films.

The final convention we challenged was having a disabled protagonist , this is counter to most thrillers as the protagonist in normally an able bodied man capable of physical activated running and fighting etc , you can notice the disability of our protagonist firstly by her limp and secondly because of the plaster she wears , we chose to do this once again to ad an original twist and also so our target audience could emphasize .

Our ideal candidate is a 23 year old woman called kirsty she is white and middle class , she has recently graduated from university with a degree in religion . She is middle class and was brought up in a moderately christian household however she is sceptical of organised religion ; due to this she has a very situationalist approach to moral opinion.
she works as a manager in a high street store , this is her first full time job and she enjoys financial independance , she enjoys visiting the cinema with her freinds there favourite genres are horror and thrillers they enjoy films with a female protagonists as they can identify whith the emotions more and they provide a welcome change form the seemingly endless male protagists which seeem to take up most mainstream films
She also buys a significant amount of dvds which she watches with her longterm boyfreind who she met at uni , they both studied religion and like films with religious and supernatural elements ; when together they enjoy watching horror films as they find them exhilarating and that they bring them closer together.
Kirsty is not interested in the advances of technology and does not know that hd means she relies on her boyfreind to set up dvds etc , avatar was not her cup of tea , her favourite films are the films that are full of intruige and the ones that make her think
Question 5 , how did you attract , adress your audience ?
question 6 , what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product ?
question 7 , looking back at your preliminary task , what do you feel have learnt in the proggresion from it to the full product.

Question 5 , how did you attract , adress your audience ?
question 6 , what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product ?
Before starting the media course in September I was a very technophobic person I proffered handwritten work to working on a computer and generally had very little confidence in my computing skills but after having done this course I have learnt many new things and learnt how to use many new technologies in this question I will address the question of how much I have learnt , The first technological lesson I learnt was how to use the website blogger : before this year I had never made any form of online blog but found it to be a relatively easy application to use .
The second web based technology I learned how to use is prezi, prezi is an online zooming slide show application after having some initial problems with using this technology I found some internet tutorials and found that there were simple ways of doing the necessary things; after this I found prezi to be very impressive and I would defiantly use this application more often and outside the confines of media coursework.
Before I started the course I had never heard of the online blog wiki spaces however I found this to be the easiest piece of technology to use and had a very simple interface that allows you to write publish and save written work.
As with most people YouTube was a very familiar website which I have used as a media player for years ; however I had never learned how to upload or tag YouTube videos and as with most of the things I learned it was a lot easier than it seemed and after a couple of tries I found I could upload and tag YouTube videos at a competent level.
Other websites I have gained knowledge of are the cutest blog on the block which was very easy to use and made our blog look a lot better. And finally we used da blog to pick our font this was very important as it gave us the perfect distorted and distressed font we needed for our credits .
As well as getting the hang off websites and web applications I also gained much more skill in using physical equipment, first of these lessons was getting to know how to use a Mac which at first does not sound like a momentous task but if you have only ever used windows hardware for your whole life the transition proves harder than expected, however after a short period of time I had become comfortable with Macs and in retrospect find them far easier to use in comparison.
The second piece of physical equipment I learnt how to use was the tripod which we used to film on , although I had never used one before it is a very simple piece of equipment and I had no significant problems using this.
Using the camera proved to be my favourite part of the whole coursework although I had used handheld cameras before the interface of the school ones were slightly different and although initially confused me after a few explanations from our teacher there was no problem.
The final piece of physical equipment I learned how to use was the Dictaphone which is used for recording speech this proved one of the easiest technologies to use and only had two buttons to use.
The third type of epuiptment I learnt to use was computer software such as final cut express I found this the most difficult technology to get hold of but after a while I have mastered the principles necessary to edit media products such as uploading transferring cutting editing fading cross fading super imposing and putting music over the diagetic sound and also speech over the non diagetic music.
below is a before and after confidence rating on the various technologies i have encountered so far on this course
Technology and equiptment | before | after |
blogger | 4 | 9 |
prezi | 2 | 8 |
wikispaces | 1 | 7 |
youtube | 6 | 8 |
Cutest blog on the block | 1 | 9 |
Font website | 3 | 10 |
mac | 1 | 8 |
tripod | 7 | 9 |
camera | 6 | 9 |
dictaphone | 7 | 10 |
Finalcut express | 2 | 8 |
question 7 , looking back at your preliminary task , what do you feel have learnt in the proggresion from it to the full product.
