Evaluation

Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

DaVinci Code
USED:

We have used the typical thriller convention of building suspense by not letting the audience fully know what is going on. Within our final piece, we have used this convention as the audience doesn't know why she is bare foot, walking down a long road which is very dangerous, in the freezing cold, looking tired. This is used in the Da Vinchi Code when there is a man, half naked tied up to a board, looking very uncomfortable.

credits from inception.

We have used credits in the standard place within the opening, as they are usually over the top of the piece, reflecing teh subject being portrayed. Ours are very bold, blocked and look as though they have been printed on, to create a unknown, 'who typed them' affect. The inception link with their theme, as the lettering is a maze, reflecting that the subject is based around a 'need to find the end/ escaping' theme, which it is.

DEVELOPED:

Black Swan
We have developed on the character as it is usually a man aged between 20-30, who is strong willed. However, we used a woman character, which is more unusual to find within the thriller genre. The Black Swan used a lead woman characterful and it worked extremely well, however it stayed within the normal age of 20-30. We felt the lead of a woman worked well so used it, but felt we would be more effective if we created the character not be withing the typical 20-30 age boundaries and to make her younger.

We challenged the use of cross cutting as typically is cuts between two different plots, running along side one another. We however, cut between the past and the present (flash forward/flashback, separating with the use of a blur, which could indicate confusion) using the same character making it unclear for the audience to fully know what is going on and this manipulates time.

inception, crossing between the two levels of dreams.

CHALLENGE:

The Ring.

We challenged our piece by using a very horror genre based story line with a thriller twist. It had a fair amount in common with thw horrow 'The Ring'; the costume; the long hair and the fact she was trapped/isolated, however it was a thriller as the story line was very 'thriller filled' and it had many conventions which fitted the thriller genre.

Seven
We challenged disability within our piece as our character had a limp. This is completely opposite to the usual thriller convention, which is usually a strong willed, intelligent, dependent, mighty man, who doesn't show any sign of weakness. However ours shows a women who is psychically ill/weak, and by the way she is dressed within her surroundings, mentally ill as well.

rough cut film with speech

This is our film with the speech. We still haven't finished as we want to add a prayer over the top at the end, as in our research the results showed that people wanted a religious theme.

rough cut film without speech

This is the first rough cut of our film. This is without the dialog in which we included.

6th January 2011 lesson.

 In todays lesson;

Paige; Finished doing the animatic storyboard which she started last lesson, uploading it to YouTube and embedding it into a post. She had trouble doing this and she didn't export in Quick Time conversion but then it worked. She also uploading a picture of the storyboard in shots to the blog.

Miles; Wrote up the risk assessment for filming our final film.

We both then looked at the shots on the storyboard, seeing what type of shots we are using, which we will then write a shot list when caroline is here.

animatic storyboard

This is our animatic storyboard, which was made in final cut express. I used each individual shot to try and recreate what our real piece of film
. I tried to make the length of each 'shot' (picture) similar to what they would be in the real film, to try and see how long the final film will be.

The animatic storyboard is 1.07 minuets long, which means we'll either have to add more shots, or they are too fast for whenthe footage is actually made.

shots of film in stroyboard format

These are the shots in which will make our opening thriller sequence, in order. We will shoot more shots as spare, or extra shots, which may make our opening sequence better.

Christmas work

As a group, we decided to go with idea 1. This is because we felt that it was the easiest to create the effects we want, and to shoot, without having any difficulties. It is close to where we live, and is perfect area. However, there are a few health and safety issues with it being a road, but because this is a very quite back road, they're shouldn't be many cars, if there is, it is a straight road and the cars would be able to clearly see us.
IDEA 3CONVENTIONS
The car park has always got someone minding it. But the one night it doesn't and the cameras are broken, a murder takes place. On November 6th Caroline, mother of 2, gets murdered whilst putting shopping in her car. Why her? Why does the murder take place the night everything breaks? DCI Miles has to investigate to find out who did it and why, discovering that it was planned all along...

COSTUME
police officer
outfit
Caroline: Normal day clothing. Jeans, shirt, jumper, coat, ugg boots. Her hair would be tied up in a pony tail out of the way. Make up would be minimal and natural.
DCI Miles: Long dark coat, suit, dark shoes, leather gloves, grey scarf.
Other police officers: In police uniform (big hi-vis coats)
The Murdered: dark clothing with balaclavas

LOCATION
This would be the perfect location to base the killing. This is because at night time, it is very eerie and would create the perfect atmosphere, as the trees and the lights create unusual shadows. Also, its great as there is a supermarket opposite, in which would be great as it would be a good back setting, and would set the scene.

LIGHTING
The shots would be shot at night, meaning that they would be very dark. They're would be the light from the street lights, and if we timed it right, the light from the full moon, however this may still be too dark. To make the lighting better, we could add an artificial light e.g; a spot light, which could be postione far away so that the light isnt focused on a specific spot and is more spread, lighting the area instead of the person.

Christmas work

IDEA 2

CONVENTIONS
Caroline was just a normal girl, who stuck to her routine day in day out. That changes when Mr. Jones kinapps her whilst she was walking home from school one day in 1996. 10 years later, its still not been solved and her sister want to solve the investigation and get revenge, as nothing has ever been the same. By herself she slowly starts progressing as she finds out clues and thinks why her sister would get in the car that took her. After years of investigating she finds out some home truths, and discovers something in which she wish she never did....

COSTUME
Caroline: The costume in which she will be wear is her school uniform,as she is a school student, and its relevant as she is walking out of a school. This will show her age is between 11-16, indicating she is still a child.

The Kidnappers: The kidnappers will wear dark clothing as it does not show much about there personality. Also they'll have balaclavas on which will conceal there identity to both the character Caroline and the audience. This will cause the audience to feel on edge not knowing who the people are.

LOCATION
This would be the location in which the kidnapping would take place. It would be perfect as it is the path coming out of Newport onto a main road, which would be easy for kidnappers to take young children.

LIGHTING
The lighting in which we use, would be natural lighting. There would be no need to add artificial lighting as it would be bright enough for the audience to see what its happening within the take, as it will be shot during the day. We would shoot our film on a bright day, just to make sure that the shots are clear and visible.

Christmas work

IDEA 1
CONVENTIONS:
No one heard her scream. No one came to help. No one listened to her cries and tried to save her. Now she's back. And she wants revenge. Did you hear her scream? Did you help her? If not, you're next.

COSTUME:
This picture from 'the ring' is very similar to how we
would want our character to look. However, our
character wont have her hair over her face.
The costume idea we have as a group, is too have our character in a long white gown, ripped with blood on it and having the character's hair across her face, so that the audience see her face. Also, the character will have no shoes on, suggesting she has struggled and lived 'rough'. However, we felt that this idea was bordering on "horror", so have changed it too having a plain white short dress as its more modern. Also we are not going to have her hair over her face, as the character is going to be walking away from the camera, making the audience wonder what and who the character is. We have used a very simple idea as it will make the audience think and ponder what and why the character is wearing what she is.

PROPS:
The only prop we are using when the character is walking down the road is a mobile phone. We are using this as it is contrasts against the simple old fashioned white gown, which is a classic 'Victorian' look. When we do the flash back's the props we will use then, is rope to show she has been tied up, and fake blood to show that she has been injured.

LOCATION:
Our main location for filming is; heydon, SG8 8PW. We are using this destination for our filming of when our character walks down the road. This location is perfect as it is a straight long road, with nothing but fields and tress's either side. It is safe to film as it isn't a busy road, and is easy to get to. To film the scenes wear our  character is struggling/tied up, would be in Caroline's basement, as it would be dark and would create an eerie feel to the atmosphere. Also, its a perfect place as it is just down the road from our chosen location at heydon.
Another good location which is a possibility is the bottom of the Garnetts in Takeley. It is a slightly bent road, in which would be great to film our character getting closer, however, Heydon sets a better atmosphere as it is long and straight with nothing but fields and trees either side.

LIGHTING:
The lighting we are going to use is a spot light (a very bright torch) which will shine down the road on the character. This will create an eerie atmosphere, as the audience will be only able too see the character and very little of the surroundings as we are going to film it in the evening creating a spooky atmosphere. The scene's which will be filmed within the basement; the lighting will be low key lighting which creates cold colours enabling a harsh mysterious atmosphere. It will also be a hard light which will clearly illuminate  areas, showing the characters expressions, imperfections in a less flattering image and shows details clearly. It also gives a crisp defined appearance to the object in view.

Within the opening scene of the film se7en, they include;

  • The production company; new line cinema.
  • Who the film is by.
  • The main actors, starting with the most popular.
  • Glimpses of things related to the movie, in a very fast pace, to create suspense.
  • The title of the film, to tell the sudience what its called.
  • Who the film was casted by.
  • Who the music is created by.
  • Who the custumes are made by.
  • Who its edited by.
  • The production designer.
  • The director of photography.
  • The coexcutive producers.
  • Executive producer.
  • Written by produced by.
  • Directed by

Font.

The font used in the opening credits on se7en is very creepy. They use two types of font; an eroded type font and an stone washed font. The effect it creates is a very eerie, and fits in well with the thriller theme.

They combine these fonts together, which creates a very disguised look about it, as its quite childish, and blurred so its uneasy to read.

Permission for music.

The music that we wanted to use in our thriller is on our blogs (Hush Little Baby Nursery Rhyme) is from a un-copywrited youtube user. We emailed them to ask them if we could use their music for our Thriller film. This was the email that we sent:

We are currently a media students at Newport Free Grammar School in Essex, and we have been put into groups to complete an AS level project. The theme is to create the opening scenes to a "Thriller Film". We were looking for some music, and we came across your "hush little baby" video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ut1mYp0GL8

We need to ask for your permission to use it in our Thriller Film project. We would be grateful if you could allow us to use it, and send us a message back letting us know.
The thriller will also be posted onto youtube, so if you would like links to it to see how your music was used, we would be happy to link you the video. Thank you for your time,

Caroline Anderson, Miles Papier Bantick and Paige Reed.
AS media students.

We will post a future blog about the response that we get.

Matched cut

A Matched Cut is where there is a familiar relationship between the shots making it seem smooth. It is usually used in action, as the audience will not notice the cut as much as they are too involved with the plot.

The 180° rule is a rule which states that two characters in a scene, should always be in the same position when the audience looks at them e.g A person always stays on the right of the screen, where as B is always in the left. If the camera crosses the imaginary axis, its called crossing the line. This shot is then called the reverse angle.

Sir Alfred Hitchcock

Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock was a British film director and producer who was born on the 13 August 1899 in Leytonstone, London. He was the son of William Hitchcock, an East end greengrocer and his wife Emma. He was raised a strict catholic and went to the Saint Ignatius College, which was run by Jesuits.
His first job out of the family business was working for Henley Telegraph and Cable Company as an estimator in 1915. Within this year, his interest for movies grew, and he frequently visited the cinema and read US trade journals.
As his interest in films were so great, he learnt that Lasky were opening a studio in London, in which he managed to get the job as title designer, where he did this for the next two years.
In 1923, he got his first job as directing when the director of "Always Tell Your Wife", fell ill, so Hitchcock completed the movie. As he did such a fantastic job, and impressed the studio chiefs, they gave him his first directing assignment which was "Number 13", but before he could finish the film, the studio closed its British operation. Because it closed, Hitchcock lost his job, but was soon hired by Michael Balcon, working as an assistant director, but did much more than this; writer, title designer, and art director. Hitchcock was then given the chance to direct a German/British co-production called "The Pleasure Garden", after working on several films in the company. He then directed his first trademark film "The Lodger", in 1926, also marrying his wife Alma Reville, on December 2nd. They had one child, Patricia Hitchcock born 7th July 1928.
He also made success on the films "The Lady Vanishes" in 1938 and "Jamaica Inn" in 1939 in which some were also made famous in the USA. This is when an American producer, David O.Selznick got in contact, wanting to work with him. Hitchcock and his family moved to America and directed an adaption of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca in 1940.
After making the film Saboteur (1942), his films were starting to be called after his by film companies; Alfred Hitchcock' Psycho, Alfred Hitchcock's Family Plot,
On the 7th March 1979, Hitchcock was awarded the AFI Life Achievement Award.
He started writing a screenplay called "The Short Night" with Ernest Lehman, but fired him to hire young screenwriter David Freeman, who re-wrote the whole script. This film was never made, as his health was getting worse, so Freeman published the script after his death.
In 1979, Hitchcock was knighted, making him Sir Alfred Hitchcock, but a year later, on the 29th April 1980, he died peacefully in his sleep at 9.17AM due to renal failure in Bel Air, Los Angeles.

The films he has worked on...
